This flax is a native to New Zealand and frequently used by Maori to weave textiles and rope. It flowers every summer for a few months and it is a favourite amongst the birds, particularly the Native Tui. The thick bush is used by many animals including the endangered Yellow Eyed Penguin, which nests under it.
